You Can Lend a Hand! Volunteer and impact a life for the better

When you volunteer to serve a meal at The Rescue Mission, you’re doing so much more than just plating lunches. You’re choosing to give your time to others, spend part of your day sharing hope with someone in need, and have the chance to make a lasting impact on an individual.

At The Rescue Mission, we serve three hot meals every day of the year, including weekends and holidays. We believe that the gospel is best heard on a full stomach, and we want to invite you to do that alongside us!

When volunteering in the kitchen, it’s amazing to connect with residents and community members. We’ve learned that it is true—smiles are contagious!

You might be surprised by the conversations that could open up by asking a simple “How are you today?” or by the way you can feel the relief when an individual struggling with hunger receives a meal, no questions asked.

Without volunteers, we would not be able to do what we do at The Rescue Mission. From serving meals to operating the front desk, our volunteers play a vital role in keeping everyday functions moving forward.

Did you know that you can volunteer with a group? (Yep, volunteering just got a lot more fun!) Gather your coworkers, friends, small group, or family and serve together!

Over the past months, we have had a blast welcoming in FedEx, American Electric, Regal Rexnord employees, and more to serve meals in groups. We would love to welcome your group next!

Not quite sure if food service is where you’re called to help? We always need volunteers at our thrift store, Treasure House. Located on the north side of Fort Wayne, off Coldwater Road, Treasure House is our drop-off location for all donations. Because of donations for residents as well as resale items coming in at a record pace, there just isn’t enough manpower to keep up. This is where you come in!

There are multiple shift options that you can sign up for at Treasure House Monday through Saturday. Here are just a few ways your help can make a difference:

• Sort and hang up clothing and textiles

• Organize items

• Dust and do light cleaning throughout the store

• Restock sale items

• Tend to the dressing rooms or jewelry counter

• Sort books and test electronics

• Run the baler and assist in the warehouse

While volunteering, you never know what cool or one-of-a-kind items you may come across that you’ll want to take home for yourself. It is called Treasure House, after all!

Still not sure how you’d like to lend a hand? No problem! We’d love to connect with you, give you a tour of The Rescue Mission, and share more volunteer opportunities with you. Email jevans@fwrm.org to get the conversation started.

You never know how you can make a difference in someone’s life or how your heart may be impacted. But don’t take our word for it, hear from some of our volunteers:

“You know, you can read about homelessness in the newspaper, see it on TV, but when you come down here, boots on the ground, the people become real. I’ve learned there’s a huge need.” —Terry

“It’s a joy to see residents complete the program and be able to move on from The Mission.” —Denise

“I knew that I had to do something. I wanted to make a difference in someone’s life.” —Mia
