Art Therapy a Charis House Favorite

The Charis House youth room is bustling with movement and the occasional shout of, “I need help with this!” There are feathers flying around, and a few of the children are dancing to the music coming from a volunteer’s cell phone.

They have just been read the book “Three Little Birds,” and are working on their craft that goes with the story. The laughter that echoes throughout makes it obvious that this is a room full of children happy to be here.

Charis House is more than just a place to sleep and eat for the many children who live there with their mothers. One of the activities offered to youth is Art Therapy.

“Art Therapy provides our children with an opportunity to interact with art projects they might not otherwise be able to do,” said Pastor Mike Baker, Director of Children and Family Ministries at Charis House.

Youth are read a story and then shown how to make a craft based on the story they’ve just heard. At the end of the evening, snacks are provided.

“All the kiddos always leave smiling,” Baker said.

A group of educators come in every other Monday evening to run the Art Therapy program.

“These volunteers have shown Charis House a level of commitment that is extraordinary,” Baker said. “They’ve been doing this for years. Their educational experience has been invaluable.”
