What you don't know

Many facing a homeless crisis have stories we can't even begin to imagine. It's easy to assume where and what they've come from, but when you take the time to get to know someone, you begin to see them in a different light.

On Thursday morning at the weekly Restoration House meeting, Dava Clay, Certified Community Health Worker with Parkview Community Nursing and Care Navigation, had Rescue Mission residents participate in an activity called, "How Well Do You Know Me?" A group of residents each submitted one thing about themselves that they thought no one else knew.

The Rescue Mission chapel was filled with laughter, and sometimes shock, as the men tried to guess which statement belonged with which of their fellow program residents.

Take a look at some of the interesting things the men shared:

  • I've had over 100 employers
  • I've experienced an earthquake and a tornado in one day
  • I like to skateboard
  • I was a bulldozer operator
  • My two front teeth are fake
  • I want to live sober forever
  • I caught a 55lb carp
  • I am a cancer survivor
  • I have been shot three times
  • I have six children
  • I am a deacon at my church
  • I was a "baller" in high school
  • I attended church with the late, great Whitney Houston
  • I was president of the Science Fiction Club in high school
  • I got my first car at 12 years old
  • I was a concrete worker
  • I was a pitcher in the Connie Mack League
  • I was a participant in my hometown American Idol
